Theatre play about baby farm in India

Indian-Norwegian-Danish docu-theatre explores the reality of transnational surrogacy. The idea and the research behind the play comes from the Indian sociologist Amrita Pande.

In the West, infertile couples dream of becoming parents of their own biological child. In India, poor women offer themselves as surrogate mother for the couple’s fertilized eggs. It’s supply and demand. It is the global market.

Commercial surrogate motherhood is a rapidly growing industry in India. Here, poor women earn up to five annual salaries during nine months. They do it to achieve a better life, independence and education for their children. And Western couples fulfill their dream of parenthood. A win-win situation? Global capitalism? Harnessing the world’s poor women?

Based on Indian research
The theatre play ‘Made in India – Notes from a Babyfarm’ invites the audience on a fascinating journey to Dr. Patel’s baby farm in the small Indian town of Anand.

At the end of the show, it is possible for the audience can ask questions to Amrita Pande, on whose research the performance is based.

The press wrote

Svenska Dagbladet

“A sharp analysis of global capitalism and extreme economic inequality. (…) Director Ditte Maria Bjerg and the actors are not concentrating on feelings or indignation. Nevertheless the performance is entertaining, not least when Amrita Pande in the end answers questions in the role of Dr. Patel, Puja, the surrogate mother and herself.”

Smålandsposten

“Amrita Pande, with strong stage presence, lived in the clinic she documented from, and this fact-based theatre flows with the help of video, still image video, text readings and the power of the audience for reflection and questions…
A difficult and heavy topic presented and nuanced with the help of smart and playful directions.
We are almost in India with the help of sound, film, fragrances and pieces of cloth…”

Global kapitalisme?

MADE IN INDIA er en co-produktion mellem Riksteatern (Sverige), Global Stories (København) og Odense Teater.
