In recent years, Danish artists have had an increased contact with the international art scene. It is especially within the field of visual arts and children’s performing arts that Denmark has gained acclaim and world-wide recognition.

__ Skagen Painters
Looking back, one of the most important part of Danish visual art is the so-called ‘Skagen painters’ who painted the life of the fishermen, the sailors and life in general in Skagen of Northern Denmark in the late 19th century. They were inspired by French impressionism and the special light which they found in Skagen.

Bertel Thorvaldsen — a master of marble 
Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) is one of Denmark’s best known artists. For more than 40 years he lived in Rome where he became one of the most important European representatives of Neo-Classical sculpture. Thorvaldsens Museum in Copenhagen opened its doors in 1848 and is the first museum-building in Denmark. Read more
